Fusarium Seed Infection Surveillance Project 2022 Interim Report

March 2022: Lacombe AB – Alberta Seed Processors (ASP) is releasing the second interim report on Fusarium graminearum seed infection part of Alberta’s fusarium head blight management.

As part of the federal government’s Canadian Agricultural Partnership (CAP), ASP launched a 3-year project in the fall of 2020 to study fusarium seed infection in Alberta to better understand how farmers can manage, control and prevent the devastating disease.

The success of the project is a result of collaboration with value chain partners. ASP is collaborating with three Alberta seed labs, including SGS Canada, Seed Check Technologies and 20/20 Seed Labs, to gather data. Dr. Michael Harding, Research Scientist – Plant and Bee Health Surveillance Section of Alberta Agriculture and Forestry reviewed the data and created maps. Alberta Wheat & Barley Commissions supplied further agronomic and management input to the project.

“This project directly aligns with ASP’s goals of supporting agriculture in Alberta by constantly improving the services and capacity of our seed and grain processors so we can ensure the agricultural value chain has an opportunity for the best outcomes possible through identifying possible limiting factors,” says Monica Klaas, ASP’s General Manager.

The project is made possible with funding from the CAP program, which is a five-year, $3 billion investment by federal, provincial and territorial governments to strengthen the agriculture and agri-food sector and ensure its continued innovation, growth, and prosperity.

Improve Your Board Leadership! Board Development Program

Alberta Seed Processors’ Board of Directors Announce Election results, and Establish Executive For 2022

February 3, 2022 – The Alberta Seed Processors’ provincial board of directors are pleased to announce results of the regional elections for regions 3 (central east Alberta) and Region 4 (central Alberta) that were held in conjunction with the AGM in January 2022.

The incumbent for Region 3, Tom Coppock was re-elected for another 3-year term by acclamation. Region 4 saw a change in regional representation with Chad Kanngeisser being elected by acclamation. Kanngeisser is a member of the Clive Seed Cleaning Co-op and farms near Lacombe.

Further, the Alberta Seed Processors’ Manager’s Association has appointed Hugh Baier (Provost) and Greg Andrews (Three Hills) as representatives on the provincial board.

In other organizational news, Tom Coppock has been elected as president and Todd McCann has been elected as vice-president of the organization.

The Association’s president Tom Coppock lives in Castor, AB, with his wife Wendy, and farms cattle and grain. He is also the chair of the Alliance Seed Plant in Alliance, AB.
“I am grateful that my fellow board members have trusted me with this position,” said Coppock. “I am committed to ensuring our Association represents our members and works towards a bright, profitable future for the entire value chain.”
Coppock was originally elected to the board in January 2017 to represent region three, located in Central-eastern Alberta. He is serving his second year as president.
Todd McCann, has been elected as Vice-President of the Association. Todd is an avid curler who farms near Coaldale. Todd’s farm is 100% irrigated, and grows canola, pulses, and cereals in rotation with a potato farmer. Todd is serving his first year as vice-president, as is the regional director from Region 1. In an unprecedented, move the board of directors have developed a “director at large” position in congruence with the organization’s bylaws. The new position is a non-voting position appointed by the provincial board on intervals that meet the current needs of both the board and organization. Factors that contributed to the creation of the position include, but are not limited to, board continuity, special project focus, committee work, and inspection assistance. Dan Brachmann, former director for Region 4, has accepted the inaugural director at large position.
